Welding Note Update Released
A newly updated CFSEI Technical Note was released to CFSEI members earlier this week, and posted on the CFSEI and Steel Framing Alliance (SFA) “Members Only” websites. “Welding Cold-Formed Steel” (Tech Note F140-10), is the update of Technical Note 560-b1, originally issued in 1999. This new version has been revised to include recent research, and references to the latest American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) codes and standards. In addition, new and updated details have been added, to better show specific weld types and how they match specific requirements in AISI North American Specification for the Design of Cold-Formed Steel Structural Members (AISI S100-07), and requirements of the 2008 version of American Welding Society (AWS) D1.3 Structural Welding Code, Sheet Steel. For those who attended last month’s CFSEI Florida chapter meeting, which featured a presentation on welding by Barry Edie and Patricio Romero, The advance copies available at that meeting have been updated slightly with a new detail and re-sequencing of text.
“Welding Cold-Formed Steel” is the second in the series of re-issued notes updated to new codes. Additional titles to be re-released in 2010 include “Screw Fastener Selection,” “Design of Bypass Slip Connectors,” “Clinch Fastening of Cold-Formed Steel” and “Inspection Checklist for Structural Cold-Formed Steel Framing.” In addition, several new notes will be available soon, including “Design of Steel Deck Diaphragms on Cold-Formed Steel Framing,” “Clip Angle Design with Cold-Formed Steel Construction,” and “Truss to Bearing Connectors for Cold-Formed Steel Framing.” If you have ideas for additional notes or are interested in becoming a Technical Note author, contact CFSEI Technical Director Don Allen at dallen@cfsei.org.
